Unity Through Design: The Pavilion Design Collaboration

Unity Through Design highlights the collaborative work of architecture schools across the San Diego-Tijuana region. This exhibition, part of the Converging Horizons initiative, showcases the role of architectural education in fostering community integration.

Responding to the World Design Capital 2024 call, the pavilion proposals present an alternate vision by the next generation of architects and celebrate the efforts of the Transborder Association of Architectural Education (TAAE/ATEA) in promoting cross-border educational synergy. Historically, pavilions have challenged architectural boundaries, evolving to question space and aesthetics. In this case, they culminate in an exhibition provoking broader cultural dialogue. Pavilions serve as platforms for cultural exchange, social engagement, environmental justice, and communal learning. Each pavilion results from intense collaboration among students, educators, and professionals, advocating for inclusive pedagogy.

The collaborative work invites us to view each pavilion as a call to reassess architectural and educational processes. Unity Through Design sees architecture as a conduit for cultural reflection and social change, reflecting the diverse cultural tapestry of the border region.
